SUMMARY:
Merit Services is seeking a skilled Marine Navigator to join our client’s dynamic team in St. John’s. As a Marine Navigator, your knowledge and skills in navigation, charting, and maritime technology are vital for ensuring the secure and smooth movement of ships in waterways and coastal regions. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Create strategic plans and map out courses for maritime vessels, taking into account variables such as atmospheric conditions, tidal patterns, and ocean currents.
- Smartly apply electronic navigation systems, radar, and GPS to oversee the positions of vessels and guarantee secure navigation.
- Offer advice and assistance to the captain and crew of the ship regarding the implementation of safe navigation procedures and methods to prevent collisions.
- Make sure to stay informed about maritime regulations and navigational charts in order to adhere to both international and local maritime laws.
- Regularly inspect the navigational equipment and promptly notify the engineering team of any problems for quick resolution.
- Work together with the deck officers and crew members to organize and carry out procedures for docking and anchoring.
- Keep a close watch on the movement of ships at sea and engage in communication with other vessels to prevent possible accidents or dangers.
- Provide support in the development of skills for junior navigational officers and crew members.
- Create navigational reports and logs to record voyage specifics and guarantee adherence to maritime regulations.
- Keep yourself informed about the recent progressions in navigational technology and the most effective approaches.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Marine Navigation Certificate from Transport Canada or a similar certification from a reputable maritime organization.
- Demonstrated expertise as a Marine Navigator, ideally encompassing diverse vessel types.
- Extensive understanding of navigational charts, maritime protocols, and navigational apparatus.
- Having expertise in utilizing electronic navigation systems, radar, and GPS.
- Exceptional communication and decision-making abilities, coupled with the capacity to remain composed and resolute when faced with urgent situations.
- Being capable of effectively collaborating in a group and adjusting to different work timetables.
- The ability to understand and follow safety procedures and protocols in response to emergencies at sea.
- A marine medical certificate and a seafarer’s medical fitness certificate are obligatory.
- Excellent skills in both written and oral communication in English.
- It is preferable to have additional certifications like Bridge Resource Management (BRM) and Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS).
